New York Yankees 2010 Season Preview
The 2010 Yankees enter this season with high expectations and fresh off of yet another World Series run. Some of the faces have changed since last October, but this year's Yankees have an excellent chance to contend in what should be a relatively competitive American League East.
Some might argue that the Yankees have gotten a little bit better over the offseason, with acquisitions Javier Vazquez, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Johnson being worthy upgrades for an already loaded squad. If the pitching staff remains healthy, the Yankees should once again be effective preventing runs, which bodes well for the organization considering the offensive firepower.
2010 Rotation
The starting rotation looks rock solid heading into the 2010 season, though there are still some question marks at the back end. C.C. Sabathia had a strong 2009 and figures to be one of the AL's best arms yet again. Vazquez is coming off of an excellent year in which he struck out a career high 238 and walked a career low 44. His component stats led to an excellent earned run average and if Vazquez can be anywhere near as good in 2010, he'll slot nicely at the top with Sabathia. Filling in the third rotation spot is A.J. Burnett, who had an up and down debut season with the Yankees. Along with Andy Pettitte, he should provide innings and solid production throughout the season.
The big question has to do with who will win the final spot out of camp. Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain are battling it out, with the loser to be sent into bullpen purgatory. This one is anybody's guess, but both pitchers have the ability to be better than average on the back end.
2010 Lineup
The lineup will be good, though the Yankees might see some regression in certain spots. Derek Jeter is coming off of one of his best seasons ever, but he'll turn 36 in June and there are questions about his ability to sustain those levels of production. Nick Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, and Mark Teixeira will hit in the middle of the order, with the newly acquired Granderson hitting 7th on most days. This figures to be the best lineup in the American League once again, and it will be counted on to carry the Yankees.
In all, this is a team that will need to replace the production of Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon, but it appears that the pieces are in place to do that. Though the Yankees might not win 100 games again in the ultra-competitive East, they are as good a pick as any to win the division and march into the playoffs.
New York Yankees tickets are currently the most popular sports ticket being sold. The Yankees kicked the regular season off on April 6, 2009 with a game at Camden Yards against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees inaugural game in New Yankee Stadium was on April 16, 2009 against the Cleveland Indians.
The New York Yankees are a member of the Eastern Division of the Major Baseball League’s American League. The team was one of the American League’s eight charter franchises and originally founded in Baltimore, MD as the Baltimore Orioles. The team moved to New York City in 1903 as the New York Highlanders and later was renamed the Yankees in 1913.
Yankee Stadium was the home of the New York Yankees from 1913 to 2008. In 2009, the Yankees will moved into their new stadium, also called Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have more championships than any other North American franchise in professional sports history with 26 World Series and 39 American League Pennants.
