Billy Elliot is a musical that has captured Broadway’s heart and has consistently received rave reviews. The musical based on the critically acclaimed feature film Billy Elliot. The book and lyrics are written by Lee Hall (who also wrote the film’s screenplay) and the music is written by Sir Elton John. Hall’s screenplay was partly inspired by The Stars Look Down, a novel by A.J. Cronin.
Billy Elliot tells the story of Billy, a miner’s son whose life changed dramatically when he discovers a ballet class on the way to boxing lessons. He joins the ballet lesson while keeping it secret from his widowed father and overbearing brother.
The show was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards and one four of them in 2006, including best musical, best choreography, best sound design and best actors in musical. Several of the actors also jointly received the Theatre Goers’ Choice Award for The Promising Newcomer in 2005.
